How Prospeed eliminated problems with flaky, unreliable Cable Internet connection at an isolated location: A Case Study

Problem overview

With one of Prospeed.net’s offices unable to enjoy the rock-solid stability and up-time of their own Internet service, at an isolated location, they turned to the only other option in the area: Cable Interner. Outages were brief but frequent and troubling enough to cause voice VoIP calls to drop and outside VPN users to suddenly lose access, and sometimes their work!

Approach and Solution

Without any reliable wireline Internet products in the area that can provide the speeds needed for ProSpeed.net’s office to operate, they used partner Cradlepoint’s AER1600 router/firewall with a 4G modem! With an agreement from a major 4G carrier, ProSpeed was able to provide itself a backup 4G Internet service that seamlessly takes the place of the Cable Internet when it goes down!

The agreement is usage-based which means the cost for the service is very low if there’s no usage, i.e., no outage. Partner Cradlepoint also provides an SDWAN solution to this product line allowing ProSpeed’s outside VPN users to continue to seamlessly operate despite outages. There is no need to consider a static IP address or any other special configuration when failing over!

Results and Benefits

For the past two years since implementation, Prospeed’s users both inside and outside the office rarely know when the Cable service is being disrupted! IT staff are aware since Cradlepoint will send outage notifications to them. Most voice VoIP calls stay live with a small blip in call quality during the cut-over. The added 4G monthly costs are far less than the Cable bill for months where there’s no outage. If there is an outage, Prospeed is happy to pay for the usage since, like most businesses, they can’t afford to be down! The solution worked so well that some of the home workers are using it too! This solution is equally applicable to any reliable internet connection such as fiber, satellite, and any outages will be backed up without losing connection. In addition, if 5G is available at the location, 4G can be replaced with 5G for much higher internet speeds.
